The Right Equipment and Knowing How To Use It

September 4, 2026

These trees were tucked into a very tight space between two buildings with limited access, a steep bank and propane tanks below. We set up our crane on the street and were able to reach over the house, rig sections of the tree and lift them out to the road where the crew could process everything safely and efficiently. Jobs like this are a good example why having the right equipment and knowing how to use it can make a difficult removal much more controlled and far less disruptive to the property.

Handling Difficult Tree Work Safely and Efficiently

August 18, 2026

A tight-access removal from last week here in the Mad River Valley.

These trees were growing on a bank beside a 13 kV utility line, with a propane tank below them on one side and a septic tank and leach field on the other. With very little room to work, careful planning and control were especially important.

Our 98′ grapple-saw crane allowed us to dismantle the trees piece by piece while keeping the crew out of the trees and minimizing the impact to the surrounding property.

Jobs like this are a good example of why we’ve invested in specialized equipment over the years. The right equipment, combined with an experienced crew and a good plan, allows us to handle difficult tree work safely and efficiently.

Large Hazard Ash Removal

October 3, 2024

In October 2024, Whitney Tree Service was called to evaluate a large ash tree growing on a steep bank beside Route 12 in Montpelier, Vermont.

The tree had been noticed by the City Arborist, who observed fungal fruiting bodies on the trunk and was concerned about its condition and proximity to a covered pedestrian walkway and the state highway. Although the tree was ultimately determined to be privately owned rather than a city tree, the arborist contacted the homeowner and provided a list of qualified tree care companies to consider for the work.

After evaluating the tree and site, Whitney Tree Service was selected to perform the removal.

Because of the tree’s location, the job required careful coordination and traffic control. We hired a professional traffic-control crew and positioned our crane in one lane of Route 12. A four-person Whitney Tree Service crew — crane operator, climber, ground worker, and wheeled excavator operator — worked together to dismantle the tree safely and efficiently.

The brush was chipped, the logs were removed, and our wheeled excavator was used to handle the larger wood and assist with cleanup.

Once the tree was opened up, the extent of the internal decay became very apparent. Large portions of the trunk were hollow and heavily deteriorated, confirming the concerns that had prompted the original inspection.

Despite the challenging location, the removal was completed in less than a morning, and the roadway was fully reopened to traffic shortly afterward.

This project was a good example of how early recognition of tree defects, professional evaluation, proper equipment, and careful job planning can allow a potentially hazardous tree to be removed safely with minimal disruption.

Courtyard Tree Removal — Mayo Healthcare

September 7, 2022

Whitney Tree Service was hired by Mayo Healthcare in Northfield, Vermont to remove several overgrown river birch trees from an enclosed courtyard.

The biggest challenge was access. There was no practical way to move conventional tree removal equipment in or out of the courtyard, so the job required a different approach.

We brought in a 45-ton crane and carefully lifted sections of the trees from inside the courtyard, up and over the building, and into the parking lot. Once safely on the ground, our mini skid steer was used to feed the brush and smaller material into the chipper and load the logs onto our trucks.

The crane also allowed us to solve the stump-removal problem. We lowered our stump grinder directly into the courtyard, ground the remaining stumps, and then lifted the machine back out when the work was complete.

To handle the remaining debris and stump grindings, we used a heavy-duty canvas lifting bag, filled it inside the courtyard, and removed it by crane as well.

This project was a good example of how specialized equipment, careful planning, and coordinated crew work can make it possible to complete tree work efficiently in locations where access is extremely limited.

Large White Pine Crane Removal

October 10, 2019

Whitney Tree Service was hired to remove two massive white pine trees from a backyard location in Warren Village.

The site presented several challenges, including limited access, nearby homes, overhead utility lines, and the distance between the trees and the crane setup location. After evaluating the site, we determined that a 90-ton crane would be the safest and most efficient way to complete the removal.

Before the work began, Green Mountain Power met with us on site to assess the nearby electrical lines. Protective coverings were installed on the primary distribution lines to improve visibility for the crane operator and ground crew during the work.

Because the trees were more than 160 feet from the crane, the crane required its full complement of counterweights. An additional tractor-trailer was brought in to deliver them, and traffic control was used while the crane occupied one lane of the road. A second lane also had to be temporarily blocked while the counterweights were transferred onto the crane.

Large sections of the pines were carefully lifted from the backyard, carried up and over the house, and placed in the driveway where they could be safely processed. The homeowner had also arranged for the usable logs to go to a local woodworker, allowing much of the wood from the trees to be put to good use rather than simply disposed of.

Despite the complexity of the setup and the long working radius, the entire project was completed in one eight-hour day with a three-person Whitney Tree Service crew. This project was a good example of how careful planning, utility coordination, specialized equipment, and an experienced crew can make a difficult residential tree removal both safe and efficient.

Large Tree Removal with Two Cranes

May 13, 2018

Last Friday night’s wind storm sure made a mess! One of our emergency storm calls was from Windridge Tennis & Sports Camps at Teela-Wooket. A large pine tree’s root system was undermined by heavy rain and was no match for the high winds that came in on the backside of the storm. At nearly 125′ tall and 3′ in diameter, it was going to be a challenge to remove this tree that was now resting on the camp’s office building. The tree wasn’t safe to climb or tie into, and it couldn’t be reached with our bucket truck. I decided to use two large cranes for the project. A 75 ton crane would lift tree sections and due to the risk of the tree shifting, further uprooting and falling, crushing the building while working on it, a 36 ton crane would support the climber. We had perfect weather for the day and I’m incredibly proud of how our team safely and efficiently worked together on this complex project.

Winter Logging

March 23, 2013

Residential logging is not for everyone. This job had several large trees in close proximity to two houses and overhead power lines. The trees needed to be pulled with ropes in a safe direction. When we were finished, all of the brush and logs were cleaned up and the site was left nice and neat.

Whitney Tree Service removes hazardous tree with 75 Ton Crane

October 31, 2010

We hired Hutch Crane to bring in their 75ton crane for this large cottonwood removal.

The tree was hollow at the base and leaned toward the house. It was 44″ in diameter, 100′ tall, and estimated to be about 130 years old.

If you look closely you can see me dangling from the top of the crane boom.

The crane takes the top.

On my way up to hook another section.

Getting into position to make a cut.

Once in position, I make the cut and the crane takes the piece away.

Lowering the piece down onto the road for the ground crew to work on.

George and I stop for a photo before I go up to make another cut.

I asked Green Mountain Power come in beforehand  to install protective covers on the three phase lines.

The customer asked that we leave a high stump for this head stone to lean against.

Making the final cut on the trunk, which weighed 10,500 pounds.

And away it goes!

The Town of Warren let us close Main Street for four hours.

I am standing with my legs down inside of the hollow trunk section.

Here you can see just how hollow the tree was.

We always have a good group of spectators for jobs like this.

Once the tree was down it was only a matter of minutes before the log truck arrived to take the logs away.
